Episode 323: The Power of Three

Podcast Episode Summary
In today’s episode, we’re exploring a concept that has an undeniable influence in our lives:

👉 The Power of Three

This episode was inspired by my recent Substack post called Three, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend giving it a read.

But don’t worry—I’ll break it all down for you right here.

Why Three?

Why does this number show up in storytelling, structure, decision-making, and even how we process the world?

Stick around, and let’s unpack the strange, spooky, and powerful magic of the number three.

The Universal Effectiveness of Three

Let’s start with a simple question:

💡 Why is the number three so universally effective?

Think about it:
✔️ We tell jokes in threes (Three Times Funny in improv, "A priest, a rabbi, and a minister walk into a bar…")
✔️ Stories are structured in three parts (Beginning, Middle, End)
✔️ In visual design, groups of three feel balanced and complete

There’s something incredibly satisfying about three—it’s enough to feel substantial without being overwhelming.

The Science Behind It: The Rule of Three

Psychologists call this the Rule of Three, and it’s based on how our brains process information:

📌 Too much? We lose focus.
📌 Too little? It doesn’t feel complete.
📌 Three? Just right.

Our brains are wired to recognize patterns, and three is the smallest number needed to form one.

🔺 Two points form a line. Add a third, and suddenly you have a triangle—something complete, balanced, and visually satisfying.

That’s why we see three in so many places:
✔️ Just do it.
✔️ I’m loving it.
✔️ Eat, Pray, Love.

Once you start noticing this, you’ll see it everywhere.

The Power of Three in Storytelling

Think about the stories we grew up with:

📖 Goldilocks and the Three Bears
🐷 The Three Little Pigs
🎭 Three-act structure in movies

Why does this work so well?

Because three creates rhythm:
✔️ Step 1: The Setup
✔️ Step 2: The Build-Up (Tension)
✔️ Step 3: The Payoff (Resolution)

Even in my work as a voiceover actor, I look for this rhythm in scripts—whether it’s a 15-second commercial or a full-length narrative.

💡 The Takeaway?
If you’re a writer, actor, filmmaker, or marketer, thinking in threes will elevate your storytelling.

How the Power of Three Applies to Your Life

Beyond storytelling, three is a powerful tool for personal growth and clarity.

In my Substack post, I shared my three guiding words:

✔️ Clarity
✔️ Creativity
✔️ Connection

These aren’t just words; they’re a framework for how I approach my business, relationships, and decisions.

Find Your Three

Ask yourself these three questions:

1️⃣ What matters most to you right now?
2️⃣ What do you want to be known for?
3️⃣ What principles help you make decisions?

📝 Write down your words. Say them out loud. Let them guide you.

💡 Pro Tip:
When you feel overwhelmed, break things down into threes.
✔️ Three goals for the day
✔️ Three priorities for the week
✔️ Three things to focus on at a time

It’s a simple yet powerful way to bring clarity, balance, and structure into your life.

The Power of Three in Business & Branding

If you’re running a creative business, the power of three can help you communicate more effectively and simplify your message.

Keep It Simple – No Cheesecake Factory Menus!

Offering too many choices can confuse potential clients. Instead, stick to three clear options.

🎙️ Example for a Voiceover Actor:
1️⃣ Quick Turnaround (Speed & Efficiency)
2️⃣ Premium Full Production (High-End Quality)
3️⃣ Mid-Tier Option (Balanced Price & Service)

Three Core Brand Traits

For me, my brand identity is built on:
✔️ Professionalism
✔️ Creativity
✔️ A little bit of sass

👀 Look at your website, emails, and social media.

Are you overloading your audience with too much info? Or are you communicating clearly with three core offerings or messages?

🔍 Your Challenge:
1️⃣ Boil your brand down to three key points
2️⃣ Simplify your marketing into three clear messages
3️⃣ Make it easy for people to understand what you do

💡 When you simplify, people engage more.
